Xac Zentangle | How To Draw Zentangles

There are always new zentangle pattern to learn.

The Xac tangle is not as popular as some other flower tangles, but it is beautiful despite its simplicity.

Let’s take a look at how to draw the Xac zentangle pattern.

Step 1

Start by drawing a dot in the center, surrounded by 4 more evenly spaced out dots as shown below.

These 5 dots will function as a guide for the next step.

Step 2

Start from the central dot and draw two lines towards one of the other four dots to create a seed shape.

This will be the first petal of your flower.

Repeat this 3 more times to draw 4 petals in total that meet at the center.

Step 3

For each petal, draw a slightly larger petal behind it with a small offset and repeat this 2 more times.

Make sure that the offset is in the same clockwise (or counterclockwise) direction for each petal.

Step 4

Draw new seed shapes between the first four petals for a total of four new petals.

Step 5

Just like before, draw a slightly larger petal behind the new petals with a small offset and repeat this 2 more times.

Step 6

And that’s how you draw the Xac zentangle pattern.

You can keep expanding on this pattern by drawing more and more petals if you want.

But I personally prefer to keep Xac simple and combine it with other zentangle patterns instead.

What do you need for drawing zentangles?

The best thing about zentangle art is that you don’t need much to get started.

The only supplies you need to start drawing your first zentangle are:

• A pen with black ink: a pen with a fine-tip will make it easier to draw more complicated and detailed patterns. The Sakura Pigma Micron fineliner works great for this.
• Paper: any paper will do when starting out. But if you want to store your zentangles or put them on display, you might want to invest in better quality paper such as these bristol artist tiles.
• Pencil: pencils are often used to sketch complicated patterns before inking them. Make sure to use a sharp pencil or a mechanical pencil.

How to draw zentangles

Drawing a zentangle is super easy and only requires three simple steps.

Step 1: Draw a square

Start by drawing the outer edges of your zentangle.

This can really be any shape you want.

But if this is your first zentangle, I recommend you stick to a simple square or rectangle.

Step 2: Divide the square in 4

Draw two lines to divide your square in 4 sections.

You can draw the two diagonals or draw two curved lines like I did below.

As you become more experienced, you might want to divide your zentangle in more sections.

Step 3: Fill each section with a pattern

Fill in each of the sections with a different pattern.

You can come up with your own patterns, or try one of the patterns from the list below.
